No disrespect to Capaldi I am sure most of us here like him, but just as a general discussion on who you think would be a good doctor.
For me it would go
Old School Doctor/ Dylan Moran or Tim Curry (pre his stroke). Dylan Moran I can see being like Hartnell, quite grumpy, angry, but endearing. Curry meanwhile would be a Tom Baker type. Anyone here ever seen Clue? I can imagine his Doctor being like Wadsworth the Butler.
New Who Doctor/ Damian Moloney. Watch him as Hal in Being Human he does the old man in the young man's body brilliantly and I can see him doing the angst all new who doctors have to do at some point.
Whilst I did enjoy his presence in NEW TRICKS during the final episodes, that is not the reason I like the idea of him being the Doctor. I have also watched him in one or two documentaries - specifically one dealing with the early years of the Roman civilization and empire.
I found his genuine interest and passion about history so captivating, I can easily imagine him being a time traveller. As the Doctor, I could picture him being led into trouble time and time again by his curiosity - rather than his obsession over young Earth girls.
I've always thought either Alexander Siddig or Rhys Ifans would be interesting in the role, though I know how unlikely both of them are.
Alexander Siddig would make a great Doctor, but he dosen't strike me as an actor who would want that degree of Exposure again, not entirely convinced the BBC will break the White leading man template either if I'm honest...

I think they will at some point, if they find the right person. At least it's a lot more likely than a female doctor.

I generally don't mind a black Doctor, my only beef is as you know just sticking a black guy in the role for the sake of having one like Neil Gaiman basically said he wanted to do . BTW in spite of his PC status I don't dislike Gaiman. He at least hears other people's POV and I think if anyone could pull off a female Doctor it would be him. I think its a shame he didn't handle the first sex change regeneration instead of Moff TBH.
If only Tim Curry hadn't had that stroke he would have been the best since Tom Baker. I can't think of any black actors right now who would be good for the role, but I am sure there is probably an unknown who would be great.

The problem is that people are always going to say that, no matter their actual motivations behind casting certain actors. So either they avoid it in order to not get that type of criticism or they do go for it and will always get accusations of pandering/PCness/etc.
He could be the best actor in the world and 90% loved by the fandom, but he will always carry with him the suspicions that he was cast for any reason other than skills. I wouldn't be surprised if on the basis of that alone most black actors would simply refuse the role.
And then there's the follow. Say they do explicitly look for a black actor to 'stick in the role'? They'll find the best actor possible. What's the difference from picking the best from a bunch of white actors? Why is the assumption that when they go looking for a black actors, just anyone will do?
Capaldi wasn't picked from a large pool of actors either. He was the only one on the list of consideration. Is that any less problematic?
